3 Tips for Maintaining a Trench Drain System

Having a trench drainage system installed on your property can be an effective way of keeping areas free of water damage and dirt. However, to keep drainage consistent, you need to properly maintain the trench drain. The task may seem daunting and complex, but these tips for maintaining a trench drain system can help.

Clean Out the Trench Frequently

The trench plays an essential role in the drainage system, redirecting water away from the area. However, when the channel is cluttered or filled with solid debris, the water won’t flow as strongly, creating buildup that can increase over time and causing pooling. By cleaning the trench every few weeks, you can prevent the drainage system from slowing down.

Even certain particulates such as dirt and grime can build up from the alternating elements of heat and water. So it’s also a good idea to monitor the inside of the trench in between cleanings to estimate if you’ll need to clean more frequently.

Keep the Area Around the Grate Clear

Many objects, such as rocks, plastic bags, and litter, are constantly flying around on the surface. These objects can easily wedge inside the grate covering your trench drain. If you keep the area around the grate clear of debris, there will be a smaller chance of blockage in the grate or drain. It’s also a good idea to consider anything nearby that the wind can easily blow away. Fallen leaves often block small and large drains, and when they become wet, the problem can become even more challenging to solve. Sweeping and spraying down the surrounding area can significantly benefit the longevity of your trench drainage system.

Use the Right Cleaner

As far as tips for maintaining a trench drain system, this one is the easiest. Like all metals, the material of a trench drainage system is sensitive to certain chemicals. Many cleaners contain acids and bases that will corrode the metal, which can eventually weaken the material and cause the metal to dislodge from its molding, even in strong precast concrete drainage structures. It’s best to use metal cleaners meant explicitly for cast iron or steel, since those are the most common metals used for trench drainage systems.

These tips are standard and effective. Although they seem simple, trench drain systems need upkeep to look good and function even better. Following these tips will help your trench drainage system last longer.
